Hail Hamilton to win in Hungary

Where we saw all but four Formula One cars lapped to witness a superb race strategy by AMG Mercedes for Lewis Hamilton to track down Max Verstappen who had a 20 second lead and 20 laps to go.

Truly amazing, sensational teamwork, great wheel to wheel racing where the Ferrari duo battled it out in the last two laps to finish 3rd and 4th.

Max Verstappen out-qualified himself leaving Hamilton to pit for a second time in second place with a massive job to do as Hamilton had to keep his brakes cooled as much as possible. “I spent most of the race off the brakes, coasting where I had to then brake only where it was necessary”.

Verstappen asked his team over the radio “for full power let me know when he (Hamilton) has DRS”. He knew Lewis was heading to reach and pass him if possible “so Max got everything out of it as he could” confirmed Christian Horner post-race.

Max Verstappen ends his race to the F1 summer break with a pole position, 2nd place with fastest lap points towards his title challenge. Valtteri Bottas when he returns from summer break will learn if he is a Mercedes F1 driver for 2020. Esteban Ocon is the favourite as Daniel Ricciardo has his hand up too though highly unlikely to get the role.

Alex Albon was happy again in Hungary “it was a fun race we started P12 had some good battles with the car coming alive in the last 15 laps, it was good” he said at the end of the race. Albon has shown great potential for his racing future as Helmut Marko will decide on his Red Bull team driver lineup for 2020 at the end of August where Albon would be honoured to be called-up for the job.

On the race itself today we spoke to Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolfe who said “as we say in Austria, great cinema”. The unexpected makes the race result that extra special for everyone in a team from the track right back to the staff in the factory. AMG Mercedes has displayed to the motorsport world, along with the 230,000 attending spectators how good their race strategy working group is when their backs are against the wall.

The decision on Bottas is all about “reward and risk, a younger driver or an experienced driver” confirmed Toto. In our opinion as a journalist his German Grand Prix failure did not help his 2020 selection as this race was not the best outcome either. Body language says it all here in Hungary on Bottas’ future with Mercedes.

Sainz in 5th with Norris in 9th gave McLaren good points for their constructor’s championship. Carlos Sainz was trying to overtake the Ferrari as their target team to beat though Sebastian and Charles had more grip to keep their 3rd and 4th places. Kimi Raikkonen was a consistent 7th place for Alfa Romeo, a driver you can count on to be there in the end.

Summer break will see the teams head home to be with their families and the drivers going to other warmer places to rest like Croatia and Majorca. We need to invite them into Viet Nam in 2020…..

Next race in in Belgium at the fast Spa Francorchamps track.
